Episode 3 of our Emerging Technologies Committee’s Beer & Bull video podcast, hosted by AVNation, explores Internet of Things (IoT) threats and opportunities.
Choosing a topic for the latest episode of Beer & Bull was easy. During NSCA’s 2020 Pivot to Profit fall event, there was a poll question about topics NSCA members would like to see their Emerging Technologies Committee focus on. The No. 1 response: Internet of Things (IoT).
We decided to plan the next episode of our AVNation-produced video podcast around connected devices and IoT. Our discussion, of course, explores the opportunities but also the dark side of connected devices. That’s another topic we dove into at 2020 P2P. All sessions are archived. Go here to watch them.
The Beer & Bull video podcast is hosted by Mike Abernathy, NSCA’s director of business resources. Episode 3 guests are:
- JB Fowler, Chief Product Officer, Domotz
- Mike Castiglione, Chief Operating Officer, Automated Systems Design

What is NSCA’s Emerging Technologies Committee?
NSCA has tapped top innovation and technology specialists within its membership to provide guidance to the NSCA board of directors and members. The committee offers insight – through video podcasts and other platforms – on emerging trends to ensure that NSCA members aren’t blindsided by adjacent industries, advanced technology, or innovation that obsoletes or devalues our solutions and service offerings.
The forward-thinking industry professionals on the committee analyze enabling and disruptive technologies to help build awareness within the NSCA community.
Additional goals of the Emerging Technologies Committee:
- Provide a futurist view of the most impactful technologies
- Add clarity to what our industry’s future scope could look like
- Allow NSCA members to explore new business opportunities based upon emerging trends that influence businesses
What is Beer & Bull?
The concept of “Beer & Bull” is simple – getting together with like-minded individuals to talk about a passion topic while perhaps enjoying a beverage. NSCA introduced its Beer & Bull concept at our annual Business & Leadership Conference (BLC) several years ago. This was a lively discussion about business topics, usually situated toward the end of the three-day event – when attendees were particularly thirsty.
It was a great annual session that spurred memorable dialog. We’re constantly evolving our BLC content and haven’t had a “Beer & Bull” session for the last few years. We still love the concept, however, and decided to bring it back in the form of a video podcast. Instead of enjoying our beers together at BLC, our host, panelists, and attendees are encouraged to tip a glass of their own during the discussions. (Yes, we might discuss our beverage choices a little bit.)
