Crossing the Chasm

Course Number:
NS121
Course Level:
Basic
Gary Kayye, Kayye Consulting, Inc.

Do you know if your customers are Early Adopter or Early Majority buyers? This is a BIG DEAL now as our industry has crossed a chasm into a new buyer and customer category - do you know how to serve this new audience? In the early days of the ProAV market, we all sold technology. Brighter this, louder that, smaller this, higher-performance that. Well, guess what? That's the OLD way to market, sell, design and install systems and technology. People don't want to buy technology—they want solutions. Sure, that's easy to say and you're probably even saying that yourself, but are you really doing it? Do you really know how to sell to this new client or are you always coming back to price (and reducing it)? This course will teach you how to apply the principals of Geoffrey Moore's Chasm Theory to every aspect of your business - from running it to selling gear to installing and servicing it. Simple as that. You will leave this course with real-world tools and ideas on how to grow, profitably and cater your business model to all buyer types. Each attendee will receive a free copy of Geoffrey Moore's Crossing the Chasm.

The objective of this course is to provide the technician with a basic understanding of TCP/IP networking and the skills required to properly configure devices on a TCP/IP network.

After this course, a technician should be able to:

  • Configure a network device with an IP address, knowing the difference between public and private addressing
  • Determine the proper sub-net mask and apply it to a devices configuration
  • Understand the use of a gateway
  • Utilize and understand the principles behind proper use of Domain Name Services
  • Apply Network Address Translation (NAT) rules and understand the limitations
  • Understand the need for and the use of a Firewall
  • Understand the use of ports with an IP address

Becoming Your Company's Coach—How to Get Everyone to Work Together to Support Sales and Achieve Success

Course Number:
NS032
Course Level:
Intermediate
Jeff Pallin, Thatcher Business Solutions

In many organizations like sports teams, companies and other groups of people working toward common goals, the trick to getting people to cooperate with one another is to make sure everyone knows what their individual goals are. The secret is in the details of developing, communicating, and tracking progress against those goals. How does a business owner or manager do that?

There's an old saying—the Devil is in the Details! In this seminar, the presenter will focus on two widely neglected areas of management and supervision, the job description and the performance review. In his work as a business consultant focusing on small, sales focused entrepreneurial organizations, including start-ups and family run businesses, Jeff Pallin has found that attention to developing pertinent and relevant job descriptions along with holding periodic performance reviews, can make the difference between employees who do not KNOW what is expected of them or how they contribute and employees who are fully empowered and participating in the success of the company.

In this seminar, attendees will learn:

  1. The purpose of job descriptions
  2. How to write simple and effective job descriptions
  3. How to make sure employees "own" the job description
  4. How to design and conduct simple, straightforward performance reviews
  5. How to make the "dreaded" review engaging for the employee

Constant Voltage Systems

Course Number:
NS041
Course Level:
Basic
Jerrold Stevens, CTS, Pelton Marsh Kinsella

Constant-Voltage delivery systems are among the most commonly installed systems in audio. They are found in millions of meeting rooms, restaurants, retail stores, you name it. Even high output performance venue systems frequently include some distributed constant voltage sub-systems for lobbies, back of house, etc. The irony today is that few designers really understand what must be done to properly design these systems. Most simply tap each transformer at it's highest tap, add up the wattage for all the loudspeakers on the line, then adjust the desired level at the output of the signal processor or amplifier input. There is a better way! As a result, many of these systems fall short of producing good quality sound.

In this course, we will explore the calculations and techniques for designing a constant voltage delivery system that ensures a successful installation. In addition to printed handouts of the material covered, students will receive an Excel spreadsheet to help speed design calculations. Students are welcome to bring a notebook computer to start getting familiar with the spreadsheet. Students who design and/or install these types of systems and are familiar with basic audio terminology will benefit most from this course”.

Troubleshooting Smart Control Systems That Utilize RS-232

Course Number:
NL092
Course Level:
Intermediate
Malcolm Montgomery, MA, CTS-D, CTS-I, EduTech Consulting Services LLC

Learn hands-on how to save time and frustration troubleshooting complex smart control systems that utilize RS-232. Because they have so many variables – hardware, software, equipment settings, cabling, and so forth – it is all too easy to waste a lot of valuable time on guesswork and trial-and-error methods. Sometimes the fix solves one problem but then creates several more that only show up later when the system is back in use. To efficiently solve control system problems once and for all, the technician needs a definitive set of tools. This class provides those tools, including custom hardware and software to use with a laptop, instruction in methods and techniques, and hands-on practice. At the end, each participant will take the tools home and be able to:

  • determine which cable or device is preventing a smart AV system or device from functioning properly
  • use a laptop as a Data Line Monitor to determine whether a problem is in hardware, control program software, handshaking, or device settings
  • use a multimeter to check power supplies and the presence of data activity

Note: participants must bring a multimeter, a Windows laptop with one free USB port, and have rights to load software. They will receive hardware, software, cables, and instructional diagrams to use in class and take home afterwards.
