Using Cat 5, 5e, 6 for Audio and Video Application
- Course Number:
- NS073
- Course Level:
- Intermediate
Can you use Category 5 or enhanced versions (5e, 6, 6a) to carry analog and digital audio? Or analog or digital video? How about S-video, RGB or VGA? Or broadband/CATV? Of course you can! For some applications, baluns are required. Exactly how to use, and when not to use, Category cables is discussed. Included is a tutorial on balanced lines and how they reject noise and crosstalk. Then we will look at RGB and VGA signals (and their cousins SVGA, XGA, QXGA etc.) in detail. They are analog component delivery systems. They split the signal into component parts that are carried by multi-coax or multipair cables. The delivery time of each pixel component is critical for resolution and picture detail, called “timing” for coaxes, and “delay skew” for twisted pairs. We’ll examine how far you can go in different variations of coax and twisted pair cables, how it is related to screen resolution and pixel size, and how you can calculate these distances yourself.
