Code Adoption

NFPA 72 is technically not a code. It contains some code requirements, particularly for dwellings, but it is primarily an installation standard that is referenced (adopted) by other enabling codes. Adoption of NFPA 72 will be driven by the adoption of enabling codes like the IBC and NFPA 101. Both of these documents will most likely reference the 2010 code in their next revision cycle. However, not every jurisdiction adopts these documents when they are issued by their respective standards developing organizations.

Many jurisdictions at state and local levels adopt new enabling codes every three to 10 years. Some jurisdictions develop their own local codes and don't adopt national codes like the IBC or NFPA 101. Consequently, it is difficult to say when the 2010 edition of NFPA 72 will be adopted in your jurisdiction. The 2012 edition of the IBC and the 2012 edition of NFPA 101 will probably contain a reference to the 2010 edition of NFPA 72. Once these documents are adopted by a jurisdiction, the 2010 edition of NFPA 72 will become law.

Many federal agencies adopt new codes and standards differently than jurisdictions at the state and local levels. Agencies such as the Department of Defense, General Services Administration, Architect of the Capitol and Department of State adopt codes and standards on their own schedule. Some adopt new codes on January 1 of the year following their issuance while others adopt them on the first day of the new fiscal year following issuance or on their own schedules. It is the responsibility of the designer and installer to be aware of code adoptions within their jurisdictions.
